Environmental factors and the exigencies of the time, such as the attainment of security in certain cases, are also influential. Although the formation and development of any village cannot be attributed to a single factor, it is possible to identify the prioritization of factors affecting how villages form and develop.

What is particularly interesting about Fahraj village in this regard is that its formation was influenced more by the inhabitants’ way of life than by geographical or cultural factors. This is because after the initial nucleus of the village was established, the village’s growth occurred in alignment and interaction with the path of the village’s qanat (underground water channel). The clear north-south elongation of the historical texture of the village can be identified as perfectly coinciding with the extension of the village’s qanats.

The first form of modern village development took place in the western part of the village. Although the product of this development does not have much affinity with the characteristics of the old village, either in terms of texture or individual units, it has maintained its significant north-south elongation. However, the reason for this alignment with the old part of the village is clearly not related to the qanat’s path but rather due to the presence of the main road within the village, which has a north-south extension. In the later developments of the village, the village’s physical structure has expanded alongside the main communication road connecting the village to the city, a phenomenon that has become identifiable in most villages in recent years.

The ancient city of Fahraj, known as Farakhr, meaning “pleasant climate,” was submerged approximately 8,000 years ago and was later named Parhasht, its route extending from the Fahraj Martyrs Complex to near the old city’s railway before being submerged by a flood 5,000 years ago. After the Islamic conquest of this city, it was named Fahraj. In Sasanian Pahlavi, Fahraj was called Pahreh, which is related to the Persian words Pehresht, Pahleh, and Fahleh, meaning city, gathering place, house, and settlement.

Some villages develop based on the characteristics of their natural environment, and the manner of their spontaneous formation is influenced by the nature of this environment.
